Newton County deputy injured in crash

NEWTON COUNTY - A crash Saturday night involving a Newton County sheriff's deputy led to the arrest of a Deweyville man -- who's charged with intoxication assault with serious bodily injury.

DPS investigators say 57-year-old Larry Odom made a left turn as the deputy attempted to pass Odom on State Highway 87 near County Road 3129 in Newton County.

Investigators say the patrol unit hit Odom's truck and turned on its side, striking a parked vehicle.

The deputy, Odom and a passenger in Odom's truck were all taken to the hospital.

There's no word yet on the deputy's and passenger's injuries.

Odom was transferred to jail after being treated for his injuries.
