PA school board votes to approve the proposed non-renewal of Ruby Gunner's contract
The Port Arthur school board has voted to approve the proposed non-renewal of Ruby Gunner's contract. According to Superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie, the school board voted tonight with 3 voting for, 3 abstentions, and 1 person was absent.
Gunner has 15 days to appeal the ruling. She is still awaiting a date for an appeals hearing for her proposed termination.
The district issued this statement:
"While we respect the jurys findings, we do not condone the actions that Ms. Gunner took in entering another teachers classroom to confront a student. There were many other options for disciplining the student that she chose not to take. We expect teachers to be role models for students, and confronting a student an hour later in a manner that escalated to physical violence is completely unacceptable. Ms. Gunner violated the Districts corporal punishment policy, and that led to her proposed non-renewal."
