Symptoms and behaviors of autism
April is National Autism Awareness Month and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has information on the signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder.
The CDC noted that some people without ASD might also have some of these symptoms, but stated they make life very challenging for those with ASD.
Some possible "red flags" included: Flapping their hands, rocking their body, or spinning in circles, not responding to their name by the time they are 12 months old, or having delayed speech and language skills, according to the CDC website.
Examples of social issues related to ASD are: avoiding eye contact, avoiding or resisting physical contact, or having flat or inappropriate facial expressions, the CDC stated.
And examples of communication issues related to ASD are: repeating words or phrases over and over, giving unrelated answers to questions, and uses few to no gestures, the CDC stated.
