Body found wrapped in sheet in backseat of car

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspicious death after finding a man's body naked and wrapped in a sheet in the backseat of a car in rural Jefferson County.

On a stretch of South China Rd. between Nome and China, there are little more than fields, farms and canals.

"This is rice fields, crawfish farm, you're in rural Jefferson County not far from Nome," Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Rod Carroll said.

The quiet spot between Lawhon Rd. and Hwy. 365 turned into a crime scene Saturday.

"We have a Volkswagen passenger vehicle in which down the other side of the levee system here," Carroll said.

Investigators said a passerby called 911 after discovering the man inside the car about 10:30 a.m.  When first responders got to the scene, they said they found the man dead, naked and wrapped in a sheet in the backseat of a tan 2013 Volkswagen Jetta. That's when deputies were called.

"Of course the first thing is always we need to get an identification on the individual. We do not have an i.d. on him at this current time. He is naked, therefore, there is no i.d. or descriptives," Carroll said.

Deputies said they're investigating it as a suspicious death.

"I think you'd have to suspect something when you find a body in the backseat of a vehicle, you know, that's the question is, are we dealing with a homicide or a suicide," Carroll said.

Deputies spent hours at the scene.

"What we do is we initiate a death investigation and then when we get the cause of death from the medical examiner, the decision will be made if it will move up to a homicide investigation," Carroll.

A judge has ordered an autopsy.
