BISD special ed director submits letter of retirement

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

KFDM News has learned the Executive Director of the Special Education Department for the Beaumont school district, Dr. Susan Alfred-Barefield, has submitted her letter of retirement.

Conservator Fred Shafer tells KFDM News he is not sure when the retirement will go into affect.

We have reached out to the district but have not heard back.

The Texas Education Agency sent Shafer to the district as a monitor for the Special Education program earlier this year after releasing its final report into the program.

Texas Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams then elevated him as the conservator of the district while he continues his special education duties.

According to the Texas Tribune, Alfred-Barefield was hired in 1984.
