Grandfather murdered only two weeks after starting as security guard

HOUSTON - by Tim Wetzel/KHOU 11 News and

Houston police said a security guard was fatally shot and his gun was stolen overnight on the southwest side of town.

The shooting happened at a condo complex on Leawood Boulevard near Bissonnet Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday, according to officers with the Houston Police Department.

Witnesses said the guard got into an argument with somebody who was trying to get into the complex to allegedly visit a friend. They said the man, who was on a bicycle, was screaming at the guard. The guard didn't respond and wouldn't let him in, so the man left.

Moments later, gunshots were heard and the guard was found on the ground.

The guard was placed in an ambulance and died on the way to the hospital, police said.

The security company identified the victim as Rene Almeida, a man in his mid-50s. They said the guard had worked at the complex for two weeks.

Family members said Almeida was a father and a grandfather.

No one saw who carried out the shooting, but police are hoping surveillance video will lead investigators to some answers.

The guard's gun was stolen, but itas not clear if the weapon was used against him.
