Another round of showers scheduled later this afternoon. Moisture levels will remain rather high for the next few days with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible.  Some of the heaviest activity will likely be around the end of the week.  With more clouds and scattered showers, temperatures will be cooler for afternoon highs.

Update on fatal crash involving pick-up, waste truck

JEFFERSON COUNTY - State troopers reopened most of West Port Arthur Road following a crash that killed a Beaumont man who died when the pick-up in which he was a passenger veered into an oncoming lane in Jefferson County and crashed head-on into a Triangle Waste Solutions truck out of Port Arthur.

The northbound and southbound lanes of West Port Arthur Road are open as of 10 a.m. except for a 75 foot area in the outside lane on the northbound side of West Port Arthur Road.

Cuong Nguyen, 28, of Beaumont, was killed in the collision at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday on West Port Arthur Road at South Garden Road.

The driver of the waste truck was traveling northbound on West Port Arthur Road in the inside (left) lane, according to the DPS, and the driver of the Toyota truck was traveling southbound on West Port Arthur Road in the inside (left) lane. The driver of the Toyota drifted into the northbound traffic lane and struck the Triangle Waste Solutions truck head-on.

The passenger in the Toyota truck, 28 year old Cuong Nguyen of Beaumont, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, said Trooper Stephanie Davis. Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, Canh Nguyen, 22, of Beaumont, was transported to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth with non life-threatening injuries. Cuong and Canh were brothers. The driver of the trash truck, Donald Winfrey, 55, of Beaumont, was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas with non life-threatening injuries.

After the collision, motor oil was spilled on the roadway. The Texas Department of Transportation closed the roadway to remove the oil from the highway.

The northbound and southbound lanes of West Port Arthur Road are open as of 10 a.m. except for a 75 foot area in the outside lane on the northbound side of W. Port Arthur Road.

Motorists should use caution when traveling in the area.

This is an ongoing crash investigation.

 

(Earlier report) JEFFERSON COUNTY- A spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says one person is dead following a wreck involving a garbage truck and a pick-up truck.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Port Arthur Police say it happened at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday at West Port Arthur Road and South Garden Road.

Officers are diverting drivers to Viterbo Road if they're traveling north on West Port Arthur Road from Port Arthur. They're diverting drivers to FM 3514 if they're traveling south on West Port Arthur Road from Beaumont.
