Board votes to not renew Ruby Gunner's contract
PORT ARTHUR - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
The Port Arthur school board has voted unanimously to not renew Ruby Gunners contract for the next school year.
I congratulate this board in voting 7-0 to protect them, to protect this child, said the attorney representing the district, Melody Chappell.
The non-renewal stems from an altercation Gunner had with a student in 2013. She was accused of hitting, pushing and choking one of her Lee Elementary School students.
A jury found her not guilty of injury to a child in May, however the district continued to pursue non-renewal of her contract.
Gunner appealed the decision with a hearing officer who recommended non-renewal to the school board. Board members upheld that decision Wednesday night.
One thing that they can't determine. They can't determine the next move. And that's God's move. He's always going to do what's right and he's going to make sure that justice prevails, said Gunner.
Gunner says she plans to sue the district and everyone else involved in the decision.
