BISD Special Ed Director leaving by ending of school year

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

KFDM News has learned the Executive Director of the Special Education Department for the Beaumont school district, Dr. Susan Alfred-Barefield, will retire by the end of this school year in early June. BISD spokeswoman Nakisha Myles confirms the information.

The Texas Education Agency sent Fred Shafer to the district as a monitor for the Special Education program earlier this year after releasing its final report into the program.

Texas Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams, then elevated him as the conservator of the district while he continues his special education duties.

According to the Texas Tribune, Alfred-Barefield was hired in 1984.
