Man shot protecting mom during apparent attempted robbery

HARRIS COUNTY - by Andrew Horansky/KHOU 11 News and

A man was shot when he stepped between a group of armed robbers and his mother outside a north Harris County taqueria overnight.

It happened late Tuesday at Taqueria Nino on Kuykendahl Road south of Cypress Creek Parkway.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the man was picking up his mom, who was getting off her shift at the restaurant.

Four armed men approached the mother, and that's when the son stepped in. This led to an altercation, and the son was shot.

The gunmen fled the scene as the wounded son stumbled away and collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The man's mother was not hurt.

The victim was said to be in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.

A description of the suspects was not immediately provided. Investigators believe the men were attempting to rob the restaurant.
