PAPD identifies drowning victim
PORT ARTHUR- Port Arthur Police said they found the body of 26-year old Christopher Ramirez Saturday about 7 a.m. off N. Levee Rd. on Pleasure Island.
Investigators said Ramirez was fishing, dropped his wallet in the water and went in after it, but the current and waves were too strong. Police said they believe the drowning to be accidental.
Police said they got the call about 1 a.m. for a report of a person in the water at the fishing pier at 100 N. Levee Rd. Officers said a woman told them the man she was fishing with dropped personal property from the pier into the water and jumped in to get it. After several minutes in the water, the man began struggling and calling for help. The woman ran to the car to call 911 and did not see the person when she returned.
Police said the search was suspended due to poor conditions and resumed at 7 a.m Saturday, when the Port Arthur Fire Department found Ramirez' body. A judge has ordered an autopsy.
