Update on BISD appeal of TEA takeover
BEAUMONT/AUSTIN - A record review June 6 of the TEA decision to take over the Beaumont school district will include only a hearing on the lowering of the district's accreditation status to Accredited-Probation and not the replacement of the board with a board of managers nor the replacement of the superintendent, according to information the agency provided to KFDM News.
TEA spokeswoman DeEtta Culberton says the appeal process is forcing a delay on other issues. The review had been scheduled for May 21 but the TEA delayed it until June 6, at which time it was scheduled to include all issues, including elevation of the monitor, Fred Shafer, to conservator.
On May 16 Judge Lora Livingston in Austin granted the district's request for a Temporary Restraining Order to prevent the installation of a board of managers and a new superintendent. A hearing is set for June 16 on the BISD request for a Temporary Injunction.
Education Commissioner Michael Williams had intended to install a board of managers and new superintendent by June 15.
He cites state reports indicating there is a lack of financial management in the district and a loss of public trust.
