Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens would not confirm nor talk about the subject matter of the investigation. He told us the panel of 12 and two alternates can ask him to extend the term.
Judge Stevens says Jefferson County District Attorney Cory Crenshaw made the request for a special grand jury. The grand jury, in consultation with the DA, can meet whenever it chooses
Again, Judge Stevens wouldn't talk about the subject matter but sources tell KFDM News the focus is the Beaumont ISD.
The investigation is separate from a federal probe into the district. Last November, FBI agents seized documents from the BISD administration building and other locations. Since then, agents have carried out search warrants at other locations of people with ties to the district. So far, the federal probe has led to two indictments.
We've already reported the U.S. Attorney's Office and the District Attorney's Office have set up a task force to investigate BISD.
Special grand juries are rare in Jefferson County. There have been only a few in the past several decades.
