CPS investigates allegations of abuse at South Park Middle School
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Two women are upset after finding out their son and nephew who both have special needs are part of a child protective services investigation of child abuse at South Park Middle School.
A spokesperson for CPS says the agency is investigating allegations of a teacher paddling special education students at South Park Middle School.
She would not elaborate on how many students, but said several.
They paddled me in my stander. Those were his words, said Dana Kelly, the mother of LJ Harmon.
When the principal knew what was going on in his school, he should have contacted all the parents in the class, said Jacqueline Batiste, the aunt of Michael Owens. CPS shouldn't have contacted us first.
Batiste said she received a call Wednesday, the first time she had heard of anything taking place in her nephews classroom.
According to the CPS worker, the investigation's been going on for 2 months, the teacher's been suspended for three weeks or so, and we're just now finding out about this yesterday, she said.
According to the Beaumont school district, Carrie Robertson, has been placed on leave with pay following an incident.
The district did not elaborate on how long Robertson has been on leave or the incident in question.
KFDM News reached out to Robertson, however, a woman who identified herself as Robertsons sister answered the door and said she was unaware of any allegations of child abuse related to her sister.
Batiste and Kelly said they still havent been told by the district what happened.
[Michael] understands but he can't talk, so if he can't talk and tell what's going on and if [LJ] wouldn't have been able to tell us what was going on, then my nephew would have been getting abused and I wouldn't have known about it, said Batiste.
Kelly says after finding out about the allegations, she believes her sons recent bout with seizures stems from that.
She says he only has seizures when hes sick, but several weeks ago, he began having between four and six a day.
She took him to a Houston hospital where they increased his medicine dosage.
They always give you emergency medication just in case. I had to use that medication twice, she said.
