At least 2 dead, more than 100 hurt in Florida jail collapse


Two inmates are dead and more than 100 people are injured at Escambia County jail where a possible explosion and building collapse happened last night.

UPDATE: Escambia County is working on developing a roster of inmates and it will be posted on around 9 a.m. An informational hotline number will also be posted.

Emergency crews are on the scene at the Escambia County jail after an explosion happened around 11:30pm Wednesday night. Crews are working to evacuate the building. Several ambulances are on the scene, but there's no word on the extent of the injuries.

At approximately 11:00 this evening, an apparent gas explosion occurred at Escambia County Jail's Central Booking area causing a partial building collapse. Roughly 600 prisoners were in the building at the time.

Uninjured inmates are being moved to various other detention facilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa County. Injured inmates are being treated at area hospitals including Sacred Heart, Baptist, West Florida and Gulf Breeze.

Primary and secondary sweeps of the facility have been completed. Search & Rescue will continue to work to ensure the building is clear.

An apparent explosion at Escambia County Central Bookling Facility at 11:00 p.m. this evening resulted in a partial building collapse. More than 100 prisoners and corrections officers have been injured.

Injured prisoners are being transported to area hospitals. Uninjured inmates are being moved to other detention facilities in Escambia County and neighboring Santa Rosa County.
