Purple Heart Memorial Bridge among state's most structurally deficient
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
A report from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association shows more than 1200 bridges in Texas are structurally deficient, including the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge, currently under construction.
"Structurally deficient basically means a bridge meets the requirements to be replaced. It does not mean a bridge is unsafe. If a bridge were unsafe we would definitely not let drivers drive on it," said Sarah Dupre with TxDOT.
Construction workers are in the process of replacing the current bridge to fix some of its problems, a project costing roughly $60 million.
"All bridges have a lifetime. And so it's safe to say, at one point, all bridges will be replaced," said Dupre.
Another bridge currently being worked on is the Cow Bayou Bridge, one of the last swinging bridges in Texas.
Because it's a historical bridge, it cannot be replaced. Instead, crews are working to rehabilitate it.
"Whenever it's completely rehabilitated, all of the mechanisms inside the bridge will be completely new and it will be just like it was when it was first built," she said.
For drivers who pass the bridges, especially on the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge, that means some delays, most notably during the rush hour traffic.
"We understand your frustration and we're just asking people to please be patient. The bridge is coming along and once it's completed, it's going to be nicer than ever," said Dupre.
