Cleveland, Texas deputies kill woman threatening them with rifle

CLEVELAND, Texas - by KHOU 11 News and www.khou.com

Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies said they were forced to shoot a woman who was threatening them with a rifle Tuesday night.

Deputies were dispatched to a family violence call in the 9900 block of Slaughter Road after hearing reports of a woman who was threatening another family member with a rifle. They were also told that a woman at the location had been shot in the leg.

When deputies arrived to the scene around 10 p.m., they immediately set up a perimeter inside the residence.

A fire had been set inside the home and deputies saw a woman walking around inside and turning off lights. That woman refused to follow directions given by the deputies, then exited the home multiple times pointing a rifle, authorities said.

The last time she came out, she stumbled and fell to the ground. Deputies attempted to approach her, but she regained her balance and quickly picked up her rifle and pointed it toward deputies again. That is when the deputies were forced to open fire, striking her.

Deputies pulled the woman away from the burning home and attempted life saving measures until paramedics arrived, but were unsuccessful. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Units, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators, and representatives from the Texas Rangers and Montgomery County District Attorneys Office are investigating. The woman's identity is not being released until family members are notified.

It is unknown at this time if any other family members were inside the burning home.
