Meet addresses impact of takeover on BISD teachers
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Beaumont school board trustees Mike Neil and Tom Neild held a closed-door meeting for Beaumont teachers Monday to dispel rumors of what could happen to teachers if the districts appeal to the state-ordered takeover fails.
We couldn't say anything about what we knew was going to happen because we don't know anything more than anyone else, said trustee Neil.
He said they tried to focus on what they did know and what has happened in El Paso, but even then, its unclear what would happen to teachers in Beaumont.
There's more talk in the hallways now than I've ever heard as far as people wondering whether they should be someplace else. Maybe in another district. It is just this lack of knowing what's going to happen in the future, said Greg Sholl, president of the Beaumont Teachers Association.
I'm going to show up to work until they tell me that I no longer have a job and keep pushing forward and moving forward in a positive manner, said Sebrina Dollar, also with the BTA. That's one thing that will fix our district is we have to work together and press forward.
Neil says some of the questions teachers asked had to do with next years budget. Trustees have not yet approved a budget, so those questions could not be answered either.
Tom Neild said the meeting also gave them an opportunity to know what questions to ask when it comes time to approve a budget.
