Words of warning from victims of purse snatching

KIRBYVILLE- BY Jennifer Gordy

It's a crime of convenience that targets women. And, it can happen just about anywhere, anytime. A Kirbyville trio have some words of warning after they fell victim to a purse snatching.
Debbie Lackey, her daughter Melody Rodriguez and granddaughter Journey headed from Kirbyville to Beaumont last Wednesday for a little pre-Mother's day shopping trip.  A trip that ended with a purse, wallet and phone stolen off the table at a Beaumont bakery.

Melody Rodriguez says,
"Once I realized what had happened, I got up and hollered told someone to call 9-1-1, but like I said it was so fast even by the time the cashier came around, the lady was already driving away."

The trio had stopped at Rao's Bakery on Dowlen around 2 in the afternoon to have a treat.  Lackey left her purse on the table with her daughter and granddaughter while she went to shop around the bakery.
Debbie lackey says, "You know when you go to the bathroom you give your purse ..here watch my purse, but you don't hide it.  It's on our table inches from our fingers."
Rodriguez was talking with her daughter when the items were snatched off the table.Rodriguez says,"When I saw the hands come over, i originally thought it was a worker who was coming to pick some stuff up, So, I didn't react."Until  it was too late and she saw the woman running away with all of their valuables.

Lackey says, "Everything that was in my purse, of course my phone, keys, driver's license, credit cards.  We didn't have a way home, didn't have keys to our vehicle"

Last Friday a woman in Orange was dragged during a purse snatching. Police don't know if they two crimes are connected. But, they do have words of warning when shopping with a purse.

Off. Joe Ornelas with the Beaumont Police Department says,
"Clutch it to your body and put arm against it. And if you don't need that big purse, just carry the essentials..one credit card you need and car keys and that should be enough and lock your purse in your trunk."

The whole thing a little hard for Rodriguez's  daughter Journey to understand.Rodriguez says,"She said that mean lady took your purse and wallet.  Maybe she'll bring it back"
