Man charged with trying to kill Jennings police officer
Jennings - from Louisiana State Police
Shortly after 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning, two officers with the Jennings Police Department responded to a disturbance call on the 100 block of East South Street in Jennings. Upon arrival, Sergeant Ricky Benoit and another officer met and spoke to a woman inside the house who advised that a man was elsewhere in the residence. Officers gave loud verbal commands instructing the man to come out of hiding but he did not respond.
While searching the residence, Sergeant Benoit was shot in the neck by 30-year-old George D Lowdins of Jennings with a .380 caliber pistol. Lowdins had been hiding in a bathroom closet. After firing the shot, Lowdins attempted to flee the scene but was subdued by the other Jennings police officer.
Sergeant Benoit was transported by air ambulance to a Lafayette hospital. No one else was injured.
Jennings Police Chief Todd D'Albor requested the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations to conduct the investigation. Investigators arrived and were assisted by Louisiana State Police Troop D and Troop I as well as the Jennings Police Department, Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office, and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Forensic Investigations Unit.
During questioning by State Police investigators, Lowdins admitted shooting Sergeant Benoit. Lowdins was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail and was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer by flight, and domestic abuse battery. The case remains under investigation.
Sergeant Benoit remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
