Inaugural Pride preparations underway
BEAUMONT-By Jennifer Gordy
Southeast Texas is home to festivals and events all year long. This weekend a local group will host a walk in Beaumont that is the first of its kind in Southeast Texas outside of Houston.
The first Beaumont Pride is set for this Saturday in Downtown Beaumont. The LGBT walk will begin at 11 at the corner of Broadway and MLK and will end at the pavilion at the corner of Orleans and Forsythe Streets.
Organizers begin their press release for the event with the words. "We're here, We're queer and We're Texan." The group has had a number of volunteer parties to get ready for the event and have another planned for Friday. They plan to use the decorations they've made to adorn the pavilion where the walk will end. Beaumont police have been meeting with the group planning for Saturday's event.
The Pride Committee released this statement: "Beaumont's first Pride is a momentous occasion for Southeast Texas. While we hope to highlight the ongoing quest for social and legal equality,it is our greatest hope that Pride will increase the visibility of the LGBTQIA Community, so that those members of our community who are suffering and struggling with the pain of isolation will know they are not along, that there are people here who love them, and that we are all working to make this a better world for the LGBTQIA family."
