AUSTIN - A number of people are going to testify on behalf of the Beaumont ISD Friday during a Record Review hearing in Austin, during which the district will contest portions of the Texas Education Agency's planned takeover.

During the Record Review, attorneys for BISD will argue against portions of the state's planned takeover. Specifically, the district will argue against lowering its accreditation to Accredited-Probation and against elevating the Special Education Monitor, Fred Shafer, to conservator.
Friday's hearing will not include BISD's contesting of Education Commissioner Michael Williams' plan to replaced the school board with a board of managers and replace Dr. Timothy Chargois, the BISD Superintendent, as part of his plan to take over the district because of TEA investigative reports that found gross mismanagement, financial and otherwise, and a loss of public trust.
At least 35 people are on the district's witness list, including the Superintendent, other staff members and five trustees.
The TEA is delaying the district's request for a review of the other parts of the takeover because of BISD's appeal. A judge issued a Temporary Restraining Order against the takeover and a hearing on a Temporary Injunction is set for June 16. The Commissioner planned to take over the district by June 15.
