BISD board delays vote on job cuts
Hundreds of Beaumont school district teachers still had their jobs Monday night, but their uncertainty about the future remains.
The school board voted six to one to delay a decision on the superintendent's plan to cut more than 200 in order to save $25 million.
Woodrow Reece was the only trustee who voted against waiting.
The delay was at least a temporary victory for dozens of students who rallied outside the administration building this afternoon and packed the boardroom Monday night to save the jobs of teachers.
"I don't know why they don't start at the top, my message is what are ya'll doing out here?" Tristan Hinola, a 2014 Westbrook High School graduate said.
"I'm scared, we have 2 band positions at west brook and they're going to cut one," Fred Turner, Westbrook band director says.
For now no cuts will be made, but the superintendent says they will come.
"Tonight was a reality check the district will have to make some tough decisions. I'm hurt by this, I don't want to be in this position, I literally in my opinion did not sign up for this," superintendent Timothy Chargois says.
The board has scheduled another budget meeting this Thursday.
