Budget still a focus for board president
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
The Beaumont school district is in the process of tackling a budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The superintendent says BISD needs to cut jobs to save $25 million and close Austin Middle School.
"You want to say this was a mind boggling decision. It was catastrophic but we did it by the rules," said Board President Gwen Ambres.
She says nothing is final until the board votes. That discussion will take place on Monday with public comment from community.
Ambres says the board planned to have a separate meeting for public comment.
Conservator Fred Shafer stepped in and directed the district to have public comment in the special meeting schedule next week.
"What is put forth on Monday, we will look and see. We will see. That is part of the discussion we're going to have. We're going to look and see what the final positions look like and then we'll discuss it and decide," Ambres said.
Ambers says the decisions the board makes will be difficult.
"I bear a burden for that, but I do want you to know that the decision was not made lightly. It was not made lightly," she said.
Note: The original posting said the board was planning to hold a second meeting because board policy does not allow for public comments in a special meeting. Ambres says she misstated board policy. The board could have public comment at a special meeting as long as it is posted. The written article has been corrected.
