Gas station clerk fatally shot

A Humble-area gas station clerk was fatally shot when several masked suspects stormed a Phillips 66 overnight, police said.
The Houston Police Department responded to reports of a robbery shortly before midnight Sunday on Highway 59 just north of Beltway 8-North.
Customers said three or four suspects wearing masks came into the store with guns. They tried to rob the place, shooting and killing the clerk behind the counter. They then fled the scene in a silver or gray four-door Dodge pickup truck.
No other injuries were reported.
A big rig driver was sleeping in the parking lot when the shots were fired.
"When we got here, it just didn't seem safe last night," said the truck driver. "I don't know why. It just didn't. Sometimes you just understand that some places are just not safe when you get here."
HPD officers said the same store was robbed in March. In that incident, a store worker returned fire on the suspects.
It wasn't immediately confirmed if the clerk opened fire before he or she was gunned down in Sunday night's robbery.
