Accused robber of the elderly may face additional charges by week's end
NEDERLAND-By Jennifer Gordy
The recent arrest of a suspect in the attacks on the elderly in Southeast Texas leaves residents hoping the incidents were isolated. Neighbors are changing their habits and remaining on alert.. The victim's next door neighbor, Steven Babin, says, "27 years been in this neighborhood, nothing like this ever happened." That is until 10:15 on the morning of May ninth. That's when this video was taken just moments before the attack and robbery in the 700 block of South Fourth Street in Nederland.
Babin says, "Evidently he hit him real hard and knocked him down and got on him." The 81 year old victim ended up in a houston hospital for treatment of cuts, bruises and an injury to his head. I seen his face after he came back from the hospital and it was all bruised and really bad and his face looked really bad."
Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush says, "Our victim came in yesterday and identified the suspect in a photo lineup and gave us a statement of facts about what happened." And, Nederland Bush says he expects the facts to link this man to the crime. 42 year old Preston Joseph Robertson, also known as Preston Robinson. Law enforcement officers arrested him last week and charged him with an attack and robbery of a 73 year old man in Beaumont . This surveillance video from CVS on Dowlen captured video shortly before this victim was followed home from the pharmacy and attacked in his driveway. Robertson is also charged in the May 8th attack of an 83 year old man in Orange that landed that victim in intensive care.
Babin says, "For years we never even thought about that. This is such a good neighborhood. If you was outside or in the back yard you could leave your garage door open for a little bit, but everybody knows that you can't do that anymore." Advice from a neighbor who knows first hand what can happen. Nederland police hope to formally charge Robertson by the end of the week.
