Murder suspect now facing child sexual assault charge
JASPER COUNTY - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS and Rayburn Broadcasting Company
A Newton man, who is already under indictment for murder in the 2013 death of his girlfriend's baby boy, was indicted by the Jasper County Grand Jury on Wednesday on an unrelated felony charge.
After hearing evidence submitted by District Attorney Steve Hollis, Grand Jurors indicted 24-year-old Justin Dewayne Havard on a charge of sexual assault of a child, alleged to have occurred on July 20th, 2013.
Investigators say the case involved an underage girl, and the alleged crime occurred in the Kirbyville area.
The District Attorney's office emphasized that the latest charge is not related to the November 8th death of the toddler, Rylan McDaniel.
Jasper Police Chief Robert MacDonald later said that an autopsy revealed that the baby died as the result of "blunt force trauma to the head".
Havard remains in the Jasper County Jail with bond set at $50,000.00 on the charge of sexual assault of a child, and bond denied in relation to the murder charge.
