Two overnight fires send two to hospital

BEAUMONT- Beaumont firefighters worked to put out two house fires early Saturday morning within minutes of each other.

Firefighters got called to a structure fire at 2080 South about 1:30 a.m. Emergency workers said they found flames in the attic of the home and a 55-year old man unconscious in the front bedroom. Paramedics treated the victim and took him to Christus Hospital St.Elizabeth's where a medical helicopter transported him to a Galveston hospital for further treatment for respiratory problems.

Emergency workers said one firefighter suffered a shoulder injury. He was taken to Christus Hospital St.Elizabeth, treated and released. Investigators said an electrical short in the attic appears to have caused the fire.

About 20 minutes later, shortly before 2 a.m., firefighters got called to another structure fire at 1625 Washington Blvd. Firefighters said there was a small fire in the rear bedroom of the apartment. The people inside escaped and were not injured. Investigators said a cigarette appears to have started the fire.
