The woman told police her landlord fired at her while she was getting mail at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night near Lucas and Galveston in north Beaumont. The woman was not hurt.
When officers arrived, they found a man holding a rifle. They told him to put it down and said he pointed it at them and refused to put it down.
An officer fired one round and the bullet went through the man's arm and into his chest, Beaumont Police Chief Jimmy Singletary said.
The officer is on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, Singletary said.
No officer was hurt.
Sgt. Flores says the man was undergoing surgery at about 10 p.m. Tuesday at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth and was in critical condition.
