BISD's ripple effect on the Beaumont housing market

BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel

Some say BISD's problems have a ripple effect across the city.

The president of the Beaumont Board of Realtors  says the real estate market is suffering.

Some say that could be good news, if you're ready to buy.

This home at the corner of Crow Road and Coolidge in Beaumont has been on the market for five months.

With all the upgrades of a pool, hot tub, granite counter tops and plenty of space, the president of the Beaumont Board of Realtors says it's a rarity no one has bought it yet during what's usually their busiest season.

"We can sell this house in one of the outlying markets for the high 2's probably though realistically in the 300s, where as here you can get it in the 180's the high 180's you get more bang for your buck in Beaumont you just do," Scarlett Brekel says.
The real estate agent says despite the cut in price, many people choose to live in areas like Midcounty or Lumberton.

"It does get frustrating, it just does because again it's a good community," Brekel said.

A community Brekel says is tainted by what's happening in the Beaumont school district.

"The news came out about BISD so things slowed down a litle bit, when the layoff was announced and I don't want to harp on BISD, it is what it is, we are suffering from it," Brekel said.

Brekel says that's causing friends in the business to sell homes outside of Beaumont.

"They live here but they've been selling in the Houston market. That's a big stretch because Houston is big," Brekel says.

Brekel hasn't made that trip yet, she's encouraging others to stay strong.

"I know there's a lot of frustration in the community but everyone needs to remember it won't be this way forever," Brekel said.

And she reminds people, with prices so low in Beaumont, there are plenty of good deals.

"Now is absolutely the time to buy!" Brekel said.

If you are interested in buying a home, you can contact the Beaumont Board of Realtors.
