Possible facility in Southeast Texas for undocumented immigrants
Federal agencies are searching for locations to shelter thousands of undocumented immigrants making their way from Central America to the Southwestern sections of the United States.
One of those potential locations is in Southeast Texas and there is a local organization recommending the location.
"When I look at those kids, I just want to be able to help," Carol Fernandez, CEO of Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, said. "There are a number of factors and reasons why unaccompanied minors have crossed the border, but about all of the systems that the United States had for receiving the children are pretty much overloaded."
Fernandez says between October 2013 and May 2014, there have been an influx of 47,000 children, ranging in age from infants to 17-year-olds.
This ignited a response from federal agencies and their partners, including Catholic Charities USA, the national organization Catholic Charities Southeast Texas falls under.
Fernandez spoke with the bishop in Southeast Texas and tried to identify properties to house the minors, but says there wasn't anything here that met the needs of what FEMA was looking for.
Eventually, a board member suggested the Al Price State Juvenile Correctional Facility.
The property is owned by Jefferson County so it would be up to the commissioners to determine whether or not to utilize the space in this way.
