Four swim to shore after towboat collision near Bolivar
PORT BOLIVAR, Texas (AP) - The Coast Guard says four people on a pleasure boat safely swam to shore before their disabled 15-foot vessel was hit by a towboat in Southeast Texas.
Coast Guard officials say nobody was hurt in Sunday afternoon's accident that closed a 2-mile stretch of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway near Bolivar Peninsula. The waterway reopened Sunday night.
The captain of the Dixie Courage contacted the Coast Guard to say his towboat that was pushing two chemical-hauling barges collided with a pleasure craft.
The Coast Guard says all four people on the pleasure boat swam for shore when the towboat and barges were about 30 feet away. The Dixie Courage wasn't damaged. No cargo spilled.
The pleasure boat ended up beneath a barge but was removed and towed to shore.
