Painting for a cause
BEAUMONT- by Haley Bull
Chances are you or someone you know has been impacted by breast cancer. Sunday, dozens of Southeast Texans came together to help fight the disease at Painting with a Twist in Beaumont.
The packed art class cheered for more than just the painting they were about to complete Sunday afternoon.
"I thought it would be a really neat thing to do, so this is my first time, we'll see," Sherial Marshall said.
With each canvas, each brush stroke, the group is raising money for the Vera Bradley Foundation to benefit breast cancer research.
"You know they need all the money they can get," Diana Licatino said.
Nearly 60 people signed up to paint a pink picture of crepe myrtles.
"It amazes me how a whole room full of people can paint the same painting and no two are anywhere near alike," Vevie Rea said.
There's a shared experience drawing some people to the class, a cause that hit home.
"My father passed way in April with cancer and we've had several other people in our family with cancer so I just wanted to help out, do something fun," Licatino said.
"Well I had colon cancer, my father died and his father died of cancer, so you know research is good for cancer, A lot of people are dying from it," Darlena Pelt said.
Ariana Anderson taught one of the two classes. She said she's dealing with her own health issues. But when she looks out to the packed room of painters, "It actually makes me happy to know that at least I'm not alone in a fight like that," she said.
The class raised more than $1,400 in the third annual fundraiser.
