KFDM News learns Hardin County D.A. expects to file another theft charge against Kountze Councilman Ira Braneff

HARDIN COUNTY - KFDM News has learned the Hardin County District Attorney expects to file another charge of theft against a Kountze city councilman, already accused of keeping more than $3,000 from the sale of a headstone and not providing it to the family of a Kountze High School athlete killed in a crash in January.

David Sheffield tells KFDM News the Texas Rangers interviewed a couple from Beaumont Wednesday about their accusations against Councilman Ira Braneff, 56, of Kountze.

Sheffield says the couple told investigators they ordered a cemetery monument for themselves in February, when Braneff worked for a funeral home, but claim they never received the monument.

Sheffield says the couple came forward after hearing news reports this past weekend that Braneff was charged with a theft charge, a State Jail Felony, after the family of Keiron Edwards said they'd ordered a headstone from Braneff in February and never received it. Edwards and another Kountze High School athlete were killed in a traffic accident in January.

A probable cause affidavit obtained by KFDM News states Braneff admitted keeping more than $3,000 he was paid for the headstone to honor Keiron Edwards. Edward's mother says she never received the headstone.

Braneff posted a $10,000 bond last Sunday and was released from the Hardin County Jail.
