Southeast Texas man found guilty of carrying 20 pounds of marijuana through Beaumont

BEAUMONT - Press release from the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office

Criminal District Attorney Cory Crenshaw announced today that Darrell Baker, 43, was found guilty today of felony Possession of Marijuana following a two-day trial in Judge Larry Gist's Drug Impact Court.

Darrell Baker of Corpus Christi, Texas was stopped by Beaumont Police Department officers for a traffic violation on March 27, 2013 while traveling east on Interstate 10 through Beaumont.

After smelling the strong odor of marijuana, the officers found nearly 20 pounds of marijuana in Baker's trunk.

Baker used multiple air fresheners and dryer sheets in an attempt to mask the overwhelming smell.

After two days of testimony from Beaumont police officers and an analyst from the Jefferson County Regional Crime lab, the jury only needed 45 minutes to find Baker guilty.

Prosecutor Christopher Cadena stated, "I commend the work of the police officers for their professionalism on the streets as well as in the courtroom. The jury sent a clear message that Jefferson County will not tolerate narcotics smuggling through our community."

Baker faces sentencing by Judge Larry Gist on September 8, 2014.  The third degree felony violation carries a punishment range from two to ten years in prison and up to a $10,000.00 fine.
