DPS investigating accident that injured female trooper; released from hospital Thursday morning

UPDATE: The identity of the trooper struck while working an accident scene in Orange County has been released.

Trooper Kimberly Ousman, 22, is currently recovering at home while the Texas Department of Public Safety investigates why a driver struck her.

Ousman responded to the scene of a one-vehicle crash at about 10:47 Wednesday on I-10 eastbound at FM 1136, according to a news release.

She was legally parked partially in the inside eastbound lane of IH-10 with her patrol unit emergency lights activated, according to the preliminary crash investigation.

Ousman was assisting the driver who had spun out of control due to recent rain and had come to rest facing west in the eastbound lanes of I-10, according to the news release.

After the first initial crash, a 2004 Mercury passenger van driven by 71-year-old Will Houston of Lake Charles failed to control speed and struck Ousmans' patrol unit from behind, the release stated.

Houston was also traveling eastbound on I-10.

Ousman was injured as a result of her patrol vehicle hitting the vehicle involved in the first crash while she was standing at the driver side window, the release stated.

She was transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont with unknown injuries and was later released early Thursday morning with minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported as a result of this crash. Houston was charged with Fail to Control Speed. The Orange Fire Department, Orange Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Office assisted Highway Patrol Troopers at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
