DPS releases names of people involved in fatal Tyler County collision

TYLER COUNTY - The Texas Department of Public Safety has released the names of the people involved in a fatal collision in Tyler County.

James Nichols, 76, of Woodville, was killed.

Eric Shankle, 42, of Nacogdoches, was hurt.

Joshua Kilpatrick, 25, of Woodville, wasn't hurt.

According to the DPS, a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Joshua Garrett Kirkpatrick of Woodville, and a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by James Oliver Nichols of Woodville, were traveling northbound on US 69 near Colmesneil at about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday when the driver of the Dodge pickup slowed to make a left turn into a private driveway. The Dodge was struck in the rear by the 2009 Chevrolet pickup. Once it was struck, the Dodge truck traveled into the southbound lanes of US 69 and struck a 1992 Chevrolet 3500 truck traveling southbound.

The Chevrolet 3500 truck was driven by Eric Vanness Shankle of Nacogdoches. He was hurt and taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.

The driver of the Dodge, James Nichols, died due to injuries sustained from the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.
