Smoke detector helps family escape fire
BEAUMONT - Investigators say a smoke detector alerted grandparents and their granddaughter to a fire first responders believe was caused by a window air conditioning unit and allowed them to safely escape.

Fire Suppression units of Beaumont Fire/Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire at 1120 Liveoak at about 7 a.m. They arrived to find the structure heavily involved by fire.
Firefighters began fighting the fire inside the home but the heavy flames and smoke forced them to get out.
They continued fighting the fire from outside the home and brought the flames under control within 15 minutes.
A smoke detector alerted the grandmother and grandfather, and their granddaughter, to the fire. They were able to escape and weren't hurt.
Investigators say a window air conditioning unit appears to have caused the fire.
The Red Cross is helping the occupants find a place to stay.
Firefighters say the fire illustrates the importance of smoke detectors in saving lives.
