Tips for water safety over the holiday weekend

By Kara Dixon

Swimming in the summer brings back pleasant memories for many.

Randall Bradford, 14, is reminded of one thing: saving his sister.

"I was playing with my other sister and I turned around and she wasn't there. I saw the floatie and I saw her hands."

Bradford rescued his sister and she was fine. But that's not the outcome for many children.

Taking your eyes off your child, for even a second, can prove deadly.

"Not only not watching your child affects you as a parent for the loss but all the first responders, firefighters, EMS too," said assistant chief of fire department Kelley Moore."

Elizabeth Bradford takes precautions when she goes swimming.

"We hold hands and we go as a group," Bradford said. "You just need to swim with a buddy. Always have that person there to watch you and you watch them to make it more safe...if you can't see your children you can't save your children from drowning. You've got to watch your children 24/7."

Safety in numbers and awareness that can save lives.

The Department of Family and Protective Services says the best way to keep kids safe in the pool is to swim with them.
