BISD tears down Recognized sign in front of administration building
BEAUMONT - Less than 24 hours after a new Board of Managers began guiding the Beaumont school district, BISD has torn down an old sign that caused division in the community.
BISD workers knocked down the BISD Recognized sign Tuesday morning in front of the administration building on Harrison Street near Interstate 10.
Workers used heavy equipment and their hands to remove the letters. The work didn't take long. People driving by took pictures when they saw the sign coming down.
The district placed the sign on the front lawn of the administration building and some schools also have outdated Recognized or Exemplary signs on their front lawns.
Once workers tore down the sign they loaded it into a flatbed trailer and drove it away.
BISD hasn't been a Recognized district in Texas for several years. The state lowered the rating from Recognized to Acceptable in 2011. Its state rating has remained Acceptable.
Some in the community criticized BISD for keeping the sign in place even though its rating was lowered. They said it was misleading and outdated.
The Texas Education Agency has been investigating complaints of cheating on state tests, the results of which are used to help calculate state ratings. That investigation remains open.
