Are your taxes going to rise in Jefferson County?

JEFFERSON COUNTY - Commissioners are evaluating the budget and vowing not to raise taxes.

The county auditor outlined the budget during a workshop Thursday afternoon.

Property values are down, and that means a loss of about $2 million in tax revenue.

County leaders say they can find ways to make cuts and keep the tax rate the same.

"A big part of our revenue is property tax revenue and sales tax revenue," said county auditor Patrick Swain. "You hope that as the economy firms up and gets stronger and the plant expansions, maybe our sales tax revenue will go up."

The county doesn't have to adopt the budget and tax rate until next month (September).

Officials say they're pleased the general fund balance stands at about $45 million.
