Mother arrested after police say she left her special needs child in vehicle

BEAUMONT- Beaumont Police arrested a woman Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Academy store on Eastex Freeway after police said she left her special needs daughter unattended in a vehicle.

Investigators said a passerby found 44-year old Alana Richard's 14-year old special needs daughter in a van with the sliding door ajar, unattended about 2 p.m.

Police said they believe the child with cerebral palsy was left unattended for at least 30 minutes.

The heat index about 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon was around 103 degrees.

Police arrested Richard and charged her with abandoning or endangering a child.
