Lady Cards cruise past Our Lady of the Lake 94-60

BEAUMONT, Texas Robin Harmony picked up her first of what she hopes will be many wins as Lamar womens basketball coach as the Lady Cardinals rolled to a 94-60 win over visiting Our Lady of the Lake on Monday.

Shauna Long had a big hand in Harmonys milestone, coming off the bench to pour in a career-high 26 points. However, Long wasnt the only Lady Cardinal to have a big night, as five Lamar players scored in double figures and three recorded double-doubles. Alice Robinson had career highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds, Dominique Edwards had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Gia Ayers finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, just missing out on a triple-double with nine assists. Freshman Bethany Cox added a career-high 12 points.

JaMeisha Edwards equaled her career best with eight points.

We know we can score, Harmony said. Not only our five starters, but the players we bring in off the bench. Were not centered on just one player.

Lamar got off to a sluggish start, committing eight turnovers in the first 7 1/2 minutes as Our Lady of the Lake built a 15-9 lead. The Saints built their lead to 21-10 with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half before the Lady Cardinals went on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 27-23 with 6:22 remaining.

Lamar built on that momentum to take a 42-31 lead into intermission. Long had 12 points in the first half for Lamar, while Dominique Edwards added 10 points heading into the locker room.

Lamar got off to another slow start in the second half to allow the Saints to get back into the game. Our Lady of the Lake cut the Lamar lead to 46-41 with a little more than 16 minutes remaining.

After that lull, Lamar put the medal to the metal and went on a 25-5 run over the next nine minutes to put an end to any suspense.

Long finished the game 7-of-10 from 3-point range.

I felt confident tonight, she said. I know thats what they expect me to do.

Harmony was disappointed Long didnt finish 10-of-10.

Shauna never misses in practice, Harmony said. She knows when she sets her feet and gets a good look it has a good chance of going in.

Ornela Bachini and Nashae Owens had 14 points apiece for Our Lady of the Lake. Sam Offord added 10 points.

Lamar held a 65-35 rebounding edge and held the Saints to 28.6 percent shooting (20-of-70) from the floor, including 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

Our defense still has room for improvement, Harmony said. We gave up too many easy layups.

Harmony also wants to see her team cut down on turnovers. Lamar committed 27 on Monday, bringing the Lady Cardinals total to 51 over two games.

Thats something that we definitely have to improve on, Harmony said. Too many times were making unforced mistakes.

The Lady Cardinals return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when they travel to UTSA. That game will be heard live on www.LamarCardinals.com. Lamar returns home to host Tulsa at 2 p.m. Sunday.
